The University of Melbourne Infectious Disease Society (UMIDS) is a newly-established student society aiming to inspire interest in infectious disease, raise public awareness, and improve medical students’ learning experience through academic support, educational webinars, journal club meetings, and much more. We are here to support health advocates to better enable them to empower communities in the fight against infectious diseases. We are here for you and the community.
Meet the team

Cassie Huang
PresidentCassie is the president of UMID, luckily met peers who are as well intrigued by the various microbes, and passionate about controlling infectious diseases, they founded UMIDS in 2020.

Nelson Hu
Vice PresidentNelson is the Vice President for UMIDS as well as a medical student at the Melbourne Medical School. Along with the rest of the world, Nelson was thrown into a world of uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic. As the pandemic progressed, Nelson was certain that I wanted to help promote health regarding infectious disease. In his spare time, he enjoys playing many sports (particularly basketball and tennis) as well as playing the piano.

Caitlin Cole
Education OfficerCaitlin loves pathogens! Or, at least, learning about them. She is keen to help her fellow medical students appreciate how fascinating studying infectious diseases can be by demystifying this complicated area. When she’s not busy being a complete nerd (usually about TB), she loves to sing, play with her cats, and care for her plants.

Roman Mykytowycz
TreasurerI realised medicine was what I wanted to pursue after recovering from autoimmune encephalitis in 2017. I find all infectious diseases fascinating but especially parasites. Outside uni I enjoy reading, beaches, Muay Thai and horror movies.

Matt Slater
SecretaryMatt studies the Doctor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne and really likes bacteria (in a not crazy kind of way). He studied microbiology at Monash University and has enjoyed learning about infectious diseases ever since. Outside of the MD, Matt likes to travel and hang out with his mates, constantly boring them with facts about bacteria (he’s not sorry though).

Yinhao Deng
IT Tech OfficerThe creator of this website. Yinhao is a second-year IT student at the University of Melbourne. He is a web developer and data engineer, he loves traveling, cooking, badminton and cats.
